Formosa
Plastics, Point Comfort, Texas:
We conducted a study of the atmospheric emissions of ethylene
dichloride (EDC) and vinyl chloride (VC) from sources located at
Formosa Plastics Corporation in Point Comfort, Texas. To
assess
the
impact of those emissions on the town of Point Comfort, air dispersion
modeling was performed. The model calculated pollutant
concentrations
at various specified locations in and around the town of Point Comfort.
Those data were converted into an isopleth map showing
concentrations
of each chemical in and around the community.
Shown below are the 1990 annual average concentrations of vinyl
chloride in micrograms per cubic meter. Those concentrations
were created as a
result of approximately 360 tons of vinyl chloride that were emitted
into the atmosphere by Formosa that year. A
